Waar zijn we: Antholz -> Zuid-Tirol / Alto-Adige

Deze plek in de bergen is vermaard vanwege de wintersport, vooral biathlon en langlaufen. Tijdens de wereldbeker biathlon in januari was Gilberto Simoni aanwezig in Antholz om de Giro d’Italia bokaal te presenteren, samen met Biathlon coryfee Dorothea Wierer uit Italië. Mooie plaatjes!

La tappa

Na de rustdag mogen de renners rustig opwarmen en via de Mendelpas rijden ze voorbij Bolzano en de süd-Tiroler weinstrasse, waarna ze geleidelijk klimmen naar de finaleklim van Antholz. Reden te meer om de wijnen van süd-Tirol / Alto Adige te benoemen. Topwijnen uit de Dolomieten.

Baron di Pauli wijnhuis ligt in Kaltern in zuid-Tirol. Een wijnhuis met kwalitatief topwijnen. Ik mocht vorig jaar meerdere wijnen van hun proeven en ervaarde complexe maar fantastische wijnen. De Riesling hieronder beschreven is ronduit geweldig!

Baron di Pauli Mitterberg Riesling 2016. Like I mentioned yesterday this wine was rewarded with 93+ points in the Alto Adige Riesling notes. Luca Gardini is one of the most influencial sommeliers of Italy. Tonight I did the valdivini notes tasting 😉 http://www.gardininotes.com Baron di Pauli winery is from Caldaro/Kaltern (Alto Adige or süd-Tirol is German and Italian speaking, so 2 names for a town). The wine slopes are higher and because of a mild Alpine-continental climate the soil profit enormously. The Alps protect from the cold wind in the north and is happy with warm wind from Lago di Garda. There is a big difference in temperature between day and night, and the region has 300+ hours of sun. The soil in Kaltern is volcanic, which gives minerality to the wines. Tasting Nose: floral, apple but also a bit petrol. Mouth: the first sip gives fresh citrus and the more you taste you explore more, like apple, melon, gooseberry, citrus, minerality, peach and yet again a bit of petrol. Nice average body, medium + acidity, long lasting taste with white fruit. Alcohol 11,5%. I tasted while eating tapas, mostly with fish and cheese, which combined perfectly. During eating a hint of herbs can be noticed. Great wine and I recognize alot from the Gardini notes, but also other tones. Not like Mosel or Austrian Riesling, but a bit similar to some Alsace Riesling. Loved it! Oh wait, the bottle is not finished..
